Privacy policy

Hey, Matt here. This covers mattjhannan.com and my other sites (tokyobible.mattjhannan.com, go.mattjhannan.com and the Japan Move Plan), and messages you send me on Instagram or TikTok.

Who runs this

MJH Media LLC, a Texas company: 17350 State Hwy 249, Ste 220 #34969, Houston, TX 77064, USA. Questions, requests and complaints about your information: me@mattjhannan.com.

What I collect

  • Your email (and first name, if you give it) when you get my free guides, join a waitlist, send it to me in a message, or buy something.
  • If you buy something: your name, billing details and what you bought. A payment processor handles your card, so I never see the full number.
  • If you order a custom trip plan: the trip details you put in the order form. Only add health or allergy details if you want me to plan around them.
  • If you message me or comment on my posts: your username and what you send.
  • Automatically: the pages you visit, clicks and scrolling, your device and browser, your rough location (from your IP address), the link that brought you here, and whether you open or click my emails. Some pages use session recordings.

Why I use it

  • To send what you asked for (the guides, the Tokyo Bible launch email, your purchase or trip plan) and to sign you in.
  • To send my newsletter if you signed up for the free guides, gave me your email in a message, or ticked the box at checkout: Japan tips, my products, and recommendations that can include affiliate links. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
  • To reply to you and handle support and refunds.
  • To see what's useful and fix what's broken. I may combine what I have from my emails, my sites and your messages to understand what readers find useful and what to send them.
  • To keep tax records and prevent fraud.

Who I share it with

Only service providers that help me run things: my email provider, hosting provider, analytics tools, online store and payment processor, a messaging tool for Instagram, an AI assistant that helps draft custom trip plans, and affiliate networks. I'll also share it if the law requires me to. I never sell your information.

My online store runs on Shopify, which handles what you enter there and stores data in Canada and the United States. Shopify's own policy: Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy.

Cookies and other companies

My sites use cookies for analytics, logins and affiliate tracking. Other companies can collect information about what you do over time and across different websites when you use my sites.

I use Microsoft Clarity to see how people use my pages. Microsoft collects that usage data with cookies and similar technology. How Microsoft uses it, and your choices: Microsoft Privacy Statement.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon and my other affiliate partners may place or read cookies on your browser and collect information directly from you. You can block cookies in your browser, or opt out of interest-based ads at optout.aboutads.info (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (EU/UK).

Do Not Track: some of my guide pages switch off analytics when your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal. The rest of my sites don't respond to those signals yet.

Where it's stored, and how I protect it

Your information is stored mainly in the United States and Japan. If you're in Japan and want details of how my providers protect it, email me. Only I and people bound to keep it confidential can get into the accounts that hold it, and every page uses an encrypted connection.

Your choices and rights

Unsubscribe from any email with one click. To see, correct or delete what I hold about you, or to ask me to stop using or sharing it, email me@mattjhannan.com from the address you used. It's free, and I'll answer within 30 days.

In the EU or UK: I send my newsletter with your consent (unsubscribe to withdraw it), handle purchases to carry out our contract, and run analytics and security in my legitimate interest. Giving me your email is optional, but I need it to send what you asked for. You can access, correct, delete or move your data, restrict or object to how I use it, and complain to your local data protection authority. I keep your information while you're subscribed or a customer, and purchase records for as long as tax law requires.

Children

My sites aren't for children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect their information. If I learn I have, I'll delete it.

Changes

If I change this policy, I'll post the new version here with a new date, and email subscribers about big changes.
