Tokyo Night Rules
Every level of Tokyo's night world, ranked. What's legal, what it costs, and the nights I actually go out. 2026/27 edition.
Tokyo at night is the best this city gets, and it's the part nobody explains properly. Half the videos make it look like a theme park, and the other half are someone's horror story about a bar bill in Kabukicho.
This is what I'd tell a friend who just landed and asked me where people actually go at night.
What's in it
- Where people actually meet. The bars where talking to strangers is normal, like Grandfather's in Shibuya, where the group seating means you end up chatting with whoever's next to you. Plus 300 yen standing bars, and aisekiya, the bars where the staff literally seat strangers together (bring some Japanese or you're aura farming in the corner all night).
- How dating works here. Which apps people actually use, what's different about a first date in Tokyo, and what nobody tells you before you start swiping.
- How to talk to people here without being the guy their friends warn them about. The etiquette, and what consent looks like when everyone's being polite.
- How not to get ripped off. What the touts in Kabukicho and Roppongi are really selling, how catch bars and bottle scams work, and what hostess and host clubs actually are, so you know exactly what you're walking into.
- My bars and late-night food: what to order (the AYB Sour at Music Bar Cave), where to eat at 3am, and the last-train math that decides your whole night.
- A Google Maps list of every spot.
Hostess and host clubs get explained so you can skip them knowing why. Nothing in here recommends paying for company. Every bar and restaurant I name is one I go to myself.
After 10 years of traveling to Japan and 3 years of living in Tokyo, this is how my own nights out actually go.
Two ways to get it: the guide on its own, or the guide plus Audio Nights: three walks I record on location, about 20 minutes each, that you listen to while you walk them, with a licence for up to 6 people in your group.
Founding price: $37 for the guide, $77 with Audio Nights. You pay when you order. On Tue 15 Dec 2026, the day it ships, the price goes up to $47 and $97.
Early access: the moment you order, you get the first chapter by email: how the bills work, plus the full ladder. The rest of the guide lands in your inbox by Tue 15 Dec 2026.
My guarantee:
Use it on your trip. If it didn't make your nights better, email me any time up to 30 days after you get home from your trip and I'll refund every cent. Keep the guide.
Pre-order. I'm finishing it now and it lands in your inbox by Tue 15 Dec 2026. If it isn't there by then, I refund you in full. You don't have to ask.
Right now I can only sell this outside the EU and the UK. If that's you, I'm sorry. I'll email the list when that changes.
FAQ
Is this the free bar list? No. The free list is 12 bars and a line about each. This covers where people meet, dating, staying safe, night routes and late-night food, and every bar gets a proper write-up.
Does it cover the adult side of Tokyo nightlife? Yes. It explains that side of Tokyo plainly, as information, and covers every kind of bar you'll walk past. It never names or books any of it.
What's the difference between $47 and $97? The $97 version adds three audio walks I record on location, about 20 minutes each, and a licence for up to 6 people in your group.
Do I need to speak Japanese? Not for my bars. Some of the places people go to meet, like aisekiya, are a lot easier with some Japanese, and I tell you which.
What format? A PDF made to read on your phone, plus a Google Maps list.
